Gateway mode can help you control your Nold Open device remotely, over the internet. In this guide you'll understand how this works and how to set it up. Please keep in mind that this is a beta feature, so some issues might appear here and there.

How does this works?

We send a message to the Android app on your phone, which will connect to the Nold Open device via Bluetooth and will notify the server if it's connected or not.

What phones can be used as a gateway?

Any Android device that controls your Nold Open devices and runs the latest version of the Nold app. This could be a phone, tablet or even an Android based tv stick. Also, make sure that you have internet connection on this device and you keep it in the Bluetooth range of Nold Open.

How to setup a gateway?

First, install the Nold Open app on your Android device that you want to use as a gateway and sign in with your Nold account so you can have access to your devices and master keys.

Go into app settings (tap the Nold logo in the top left corner) and turn on the Gateway mode toggle.

Once it's turned on, sign into Nold Cloud and you will see the enabled gateway in the top right corner.

How does the auto-open function work?

In this mode, your phone will look for the Nold Open device in the background. If it founds it (you are in Bluetooth range), a notification will pop-up on your phone, so you don't need to start the app to select a key, you can interact with Nold directly from the notification. Optionally, it can open the door at the same time you see the notification on the background.

To setup auto-open and notification, go to your device settings and check the Allow notifications option.

You can setup notifications in two ways:

When i arrive In this mode, you'll see notifications only when you are arriving from a distance and it won't appear again during your stay. This is useful for garage doors and gates for example, so it won't open by accident while you are moving around the house.

Always In this mode, you'll see a notification every time you get close to Nold Open. You can configure the range, so it will only trigger the notifications when you are really close to the device. This is useful for office doors for example.

For both methods, you can turn on Background open. If this is turned on, your door will open at the same time you see the notification on your phone.

How do i install Nold Open?

Nold Open connects to your existing garage door or gate opener. Most of these openers have an input to connect third party accessories like push buttons and wall switches, this is where Nold Open will connect.

First, make sure you have everything you need to install Nold Open.

Garage doors If you have a wall switch already installed, follow the wires that connects to your opener's motor. Usually there are two wires and Nold OUT1 will connect to the same inputs. Your existing wall switch and remotes will work just as before. If you don't have a wall switch, search for your opener's manual, most probably it describes how to connect a switch to your opener and just follow these instructions to connect Nold Open.

Most European openers (like Hörmann, Nice, Ditec, Marantec etc…) will support power output to power up additional accessories, like radio receivers. This is where Nold PWR will connect. Most American openers (like Liftmaster, Chamberlain) does not have an easily accessible power output. In this case, you need to use an additional power supply to power up Nold. How does Nold Open work?

Think of Nold Open as low-voltage push button and a switch, which is controlled by your phone. Nold supports two operation modes:

Pulse mode This is the default option, which works like a push button. You might have a wall switch for your garage already installed, this is how Nold works and connects to your opener. This mode is suitable for most garage door openers, gate openers and a lot more that requires a single push button to operate things. The pulse length can be increased in the App Settings up to 10 seconds, so it could work with magnetic door switches too (like apartment doors).

Open & close mode In this mode, Nold works like a light switch. You can change the operation mode in the device settings menu. With this mode you can control your LED lights (turning it on or off), hook it up to your alarm or even start your irrigation system with your phone. We also support an optional auto-close feature in this mode, so when you disconnect the device, it will turn it off automatically for you.

As you can see, Nold has several user areas, just keep in mind that it can only switch low-power devices.

What do I need to install Nold Open?

In most of the cases, all you need is a 4 or 6 conductor bell wire and a small screwdriver to connect these wires to Nold.

If you are planning to use Nold outdoors, you might need a waterproof plastic enclosure, since Nold is not waterproof.

For certain garage door openers (like Liftmaster or Chamberlain openers), it might be difficult to access the power output to power up Nold. In this case, you need an additional power adapter to power up Nold. Any 9-24V power adapter will work just fine. You can buy these at your local hardware store or you might have an old charger. For example:

Simply cut off the connector from the end (or use an adapter like on the photo) and connect it to Nold. Don't worry about the order of the wires, Nold Open is polarity independent.
